Rockin’ Around The Zoo

As Simon & Garfunkel once sang, “it’s all happening at the zoo.” The final installment of its “Music In The Zoo” shapes up to be a particularly unique musical experience. The Zoo has organized a new night that salutes native SoCal indie bands. As part of the evening, Kidrockers LA will be hosting a stage featuring two bands, The Happy Hollows and The Useless Keys, who will be doing tunes for families as well as their regular sets. Besides enjoying the music, visitors can check out various animals, who will be up after dark. Picnics are permitted now and food will also be available. Tickets cost $16.50 for adults and $10.50 for children 6-15.
When: 6-9 p.m. Fri. Aug. 6
Where: LA Zoo, 5333 Zoo Dr., L.A.

C’mon And Hear Renee And Jeremy

Renee Stahl and Jeremy Toback are a duo, but not a couple. The two veteran local musicians (Jeremy was once in a band with Pearl Jam’s Stone Gossard, while Renee’s songs have appeared on numerous TV shows) are both parents and teamed up to put their own special spin on family music. Their current CD,    C’mon, contains a compelling offering of well-crafted tunes that’ll entertain the entire family. McCabe’s other Matinee Kids Show this month happens Aug. 22 when ukulele-playing Heidi Swedberg performs with her group, the Sukey Jump Band.
When: 11 a.m. Sun. Aug. 8
Where: McCabe’s, 3101 Pico Blvd., Santa Monica

Shakin’ Up Shakespeare

The always-imaginative Actors’ Gang is again bringing Shakespeare to family audiences. This summer’s production, “Katie The Curst,” is an adaptation of “Taming of the Shrew.” Adapted and directed by Shakespearean authority Lisa Wolpe, this musical comedy is set in the 1970’s punk rock scene and features such fun shenanigans as water balloons, cream pies and other slapstick-y acrobatics. The play (which is presented for free) runs through Aug. 29, but this Sunday the Gang will be hosting an Open House after the show.
When: 11 a.m. Sat.-Sun., through Aug. 29
Where: Media Park, 9070 Venice Blvd., Culver City.
