Rockin’ Around The Zoo

As Simon & Garfunkel once sang, “it’s all happening at the zoo.” The final installment of its “Music In The Zoo” shapes up to be a particularly unique musical experience. The Zoo has organized a new night that salutes native SoCal indie bands. As part of the evening, Kidrockers LA will be hosting a stage featuring two bands, The Happy Hollows and The Useless Keys, who will be doing tunes for families as well as their regular sets. Besides enjoying the music, visitors can check out various animals, who will be up after dark. Picnics are permitted now and food will also be available. Tickets cost $16.50 for adults and $10.50 for children 6-15.

C’mon And Hear Renee And Jeremy

Renee Stahl and Jeremy Toback are a duo, but not a couple. The two veteran local musicians (Jeremy was once in a band with Pearl Jam’s Stone Gossard, while Renee’s songs have appeared on numerous TV shows) are both parents and teamed up to put their own special spin on family music. Their current CD,    C’mon, contains a compelling offering of well-crafted tunes that’ll entertain the entire family. McCabe’s other Matinee Kids Show this month happens Aug. 22 when ukulele-playing Heidi Swedberg performs with her group, the Sukey Jump Band.

Shakin’ Up Shakespeare

The always-imaginative Actors’ Gang is again bringing Shakespeare to family audiences. This summer’s production, “Katie The Curst,” is an adaptation of “Taming of the Shrew.” Adapted and directed by Shakespearean authority Lisa Wolpe, this musical comedy is set in the 1970’s punk rock scene and features such fun shenanigans as water balloons, cream pies and other slapstick-y acrobatics. The play (which is presented for free) runs through Aug. 29, but this Sunday the Gang will be hosting an Open House after the show.

Up, Up And Away

If you want to see some beautiful balloons, fly on over to Santa Paula this weekend, as the annual Citrus Classic Balloon Festival takes off again. While in-air flights aren’t open to the public, you can get a sense of flying by going on tethered balloon rides (weather-permitting, of course), or just enjoy the flotilla of colorful balloons. There will also be a car and motorcycle show, a youth rodeo roping demonstration and a blimp air show as well as kids activities (like a youth soccer clinic). Advance tickets cost $7 for adults and $3 for children 5-14, while they cost $10 for adults and $5 for children at the gate.

Surf’s Up

Hey dude, it’s time to hang ten again as the International Surf Festival rolls into the South Bay this weekend. The aquatic-centric activities being with Friday’s L.A. County Lifeguard Championships and continue with a bodysurfing championship, a volleyball tournament, sand soccer, a pier-to-pier paddleboard championship, youth swims and paddles, a lifeguard dory race and more. Events will be happening along the beaches of Torrance, Hermosa Beach, Manhattan Beach and Redondo Beach, and admission is free for spectators.

Be Part Of The Art

Friday marks the opening reception for an intriguing art exhibit entitled “A Cloud Unfurled By Its Ribbons.” A trio of artists (Jim Holyoak, Airom Bleicher and Matt Shane) has teamed up to create a unique art piece that includes public participation. While not gearing specifically for kids, the artists are welcoming everyone to help them transform the gallery space. Children, for example, can place their handprints on pieces of paper that the artists can turn into various creatures as part of the installation. So it might make for an interesting creative experience for budding young conceptual artists. Admission is free.

Giddy Up At The Autry

Saddle up and mosey on over to the Autry National Center this Saturday for its first ever National Day of the Cowboy and Cowgirl Festival. Come see some real, live modern day cowboys and check out the ropin’, gunslingin’ and blacksmithin’. Kids can try their hands at leather braiding, gold panning and other Old West amusements. Visitors can also enjoy live entertainment, BBQ and more Western activities. Museum admission is $9 for adults and $3 for children 3-12.

Racin’ To A Cinema Near You

Racing Dreams is a terrific documentary that the burgeoning career of three tween race car drivers: 11-year-old Annabeth, 12-year-old Josh and 13-year old Brandon. The film follows the ups and downs of their season in the World Karting Association. Viewers get a fascinating look at these talented youths trying to juggle teenhood with a possible race car driver career. The film, executive produced by actor Dwayne Johnson, is directed by Academy Award-nominated filmmaker Marshall Curry. It’s rated PG and some of the material is a little mature for young children. Ticket prices vary.

Rockin’ In At The Westfield (Topanga)

The Grammy Museum is wrapping up its first ever traveling show this weekend in a rockin’ way. The 1,000 square foot exhibit, Instrument of Art, displaying a selection of little-seen photographs and state-of-the-art interactive electronic instruments from Roland, has been up at the Westfield Topanga Mall since mid-June. On Sat. at 11a.m., it will host a live performance from Rhythm Child, the highly popular local family band.

Ladies and Gentlemen, Children of All Ages….

Yes, the world famous Ringling Bros. And Barnum & Bailey’s Circus is setting up its tents in Southern California again. The Circus will be at the Staples Center from July 14-18, and later it will be at Ontario’s Citizens Business Bank Arena (July 21-25) and Anaheim’s Honda Center (July 28-Aug. 8). This year’s show, entitled “Barnum’s FUNundrum,” will celebrate P.T. Barnum’s 200th anniversary with an entertaining array of acrobatics, animals, clowns and more. Tickets run from $12-$100.

Sleeping Beauty Awakens The Dorothy Chandler Pavilion

The heralded American Ballet Theatre will be performing the classic ballet work, Sleeping Ballet at the Dorothy Chandler Pavilion July 15-17. Utilizing Tchaikovsky’s renowned score, the ABT will have a different pair of lead dancers for each of its five performances. A Wonderful Weekend of Free Arts

As part of the Target Arts & Wonder Free Family Festival, there will be free events around Southern California at places like LACMA, California African American Museum, Japanese American National Museum, the Museum of Latin American Art. Perhaps the biggest event is the two-day festival taking place at San Pedro’s Peck Park. This free festival features live music (from Afro-Cuban to Zydeco), arts & crafts, food and other multi-cultural entertainment.

What’s Up Doc

One of the most fun times for families at the Hollywood Bowl is its Bugs Bunny At the Symphony show. Those Dashing Dachshunds

Los Alamitos Race Course will be hosting a unique type of dog racing on Saturday. The 15th Annual Wienerschnitzel Wiener Nationals pits nearly 100 dachshunds in a race for canine glory. The top dogs from a dozen 50-yard trial sprints will compete against each other in a grand finale. The winning weiner dog will receive $1,000 for its owner, a crystal trophy and a red doghouse as well as a trip to participate in the National Grand Finale in San Diego. Los Alamitos admission is $3 for adults with children 17 and younger getting in free. Proceeds will benefit the Seal Beach Animal Care Center.

Pop Over To LACMA For Pop Art

The L.A. County Museum of Art currently is showcasing the work of one of Southern California’s top Pop artists, John Baldessari. The exhibition, entitled “Pure Beauty,” serves as a marvelous retrospective of his conceptual art pieces from the ’50s to the present. There are a lot of playful, fun qualities to his work that children can relate to. Appropriately, this month’s Andell Family Sundays art programs will be inspired by Baldessari’s artwork. The workshop is free but museum admission is $12 for adults, and children 17 and younger are free.

The Twilight Dance Series Rises Again

Since 1983, the sound of music has been filling the air at Santa Monica Pier every summer. This year’s season begins this Thursday night with a performance of exotic “Congolese Trance Dance-Tronica” by Konono No.1. The series, which runs through Sept. 1, offers music from around the world: India, Italy, England, Australia, New Orleans and right here in Southern California. Rickie Lee Jones (Aug. 5) might be the biggest name, but you don’t need much of a reason to picnic on the beach and listen to the free music.

You Can Feel the Love Friday Night

Los Angeles’ FAME Church Choir will be singing as well. The Rockets’ Red Glare

The Discovery Science Center blasts off the Fourth of July weekend with the opening of the new, permanent exhibit, Rocket Lab. Offering a historical and scientific look at rocket travel, this lab contains interactive learning zones about space, rockets, and engineering. Young astronauts should go nuts over it. To celebrate this lab’s launch, the Cube will be giving away Boeing Delta Legacy trading cards at the grand opening on Friday. Admission is $12.95 for adults and $9.95 for children 3-17.

Happy Mummy Day

There will be a little bit of Halloween this Independence Day weekend as the California Science Center unveils “Mummies of the World.” The exhibit is a unique, and undoubtedly a bit eerie, look at human and animals mummies from around the globe, along with multimedia 3D animations, hands-on science activities and other artifacts. You can also explore the Lost Egypt exhibit. Mummies of the World admission is $19.50 for adults, $16.50 for youths and $12.50 for children 4-12, although admission to the rest of the museum is free.

The Summer Family Fun series at the Original Farmers Market continues this Sunday with an animal theme. The Alive & Well Expo is alive and well again at the LA Convention Center this weekend. It’s Easy As 1-2-3

It’ll be one “thriller” of an evening at Disney Hall’s W.M. Keck Amphitheatre on Friday night. The night’s Sing-Along will spotlight the music of the Jackson 5 as well as Michael and Janet Jackson. These Friday Night Sing-Alongs are like participating in your own Glee concert, except that it’s open to all levels of singing skills. Future sing-alongs include Disco Night on July 23 and Broadway show tunes on Aug. 20. Flip Your Wig – Twice

The Grammy-nominated group Beethoven’s Wig comes through town for a pair of shows this weekend. Saturday, they will play at Kidspace, while Sunday’s show is at McCabe’s. Fronted by lyricist/singer/producer Richard Perlmutter, Beethoven’s Wig has been giving kids a fun – and educational – way to learn about classical music for almost a decade by putting lyrics to classic pieces. The Kidspace show is free with the museum’s $10 admission while tickets for McCabe’s cost $8. Kid music fans should also know that the Grammy Museum (800 W. Olympic Blvd., L.A., www.grammymuseum.org) will salute the new Putumayo CD Rock & Roll Playground with a performance by popular local musician Melissa Green on Sat. at 10 a.m.

A Day Fit To a (Model) T

Car buffs will have a boffo day at the Heritage Square Museum. The museum annual Vintage Automobile and Classic Car Show will showcase a bevy of beautiful vehicles, from the historic Model T to Fifties’ hot rods. Car Clubs from around the Southland will be participating too. You have the chance to get a close-up look at cars like the 1935 Peugeot 302 and a rare 1941 Tatra T87. It’s an opportunity to give Dad an early Father’s Day treat. The auto show is included in the museum’s admission, which is  $10 for adults and $5 for children 6-12.

The Beverly Hills’ Sunday Farmers’ Market transforms into a house of pies this Sunday. It’s the annual Pie Bake & Piesta a’la Beverly Hills. The event includes a judged pie contest, a pieathelon and a pie-eating contest. Kids can create real pies at the “half pint pantry” or just make play dough pies. There will also be entertainment, pony rides and a petting zoo, along with the regular farmers’ market, of course.

We’re Not On Sesame Street Anymore

This Saturday the Devil’s Night Drive-In will have a family night screening of Jim Henson’s 1986 feature film Labyrinth. This fantasy movie involves a young Jennifer Connelly trying to save her half-brother by solving the Goblin King’s (David Bowie) dangerous labyrinth. The rooftop drive-in features a DJ playing music before the screening and car hops to bring you food and popcorn. Admission is $10 for adults and $5 for children 12 and younger.

Fun On a String

It will be a puppet-palooza at the McGroarty Arts Center on Saturday with the annual Celebrate Puppetry Festival. Scheduled performers include Bob Baker’s Marionettes, Mr. Fabulous, Nancy Mitchell’s Miniken Puppet Productions and Johanna Smith’s Oh So Silly Animal Stories. At this free festival, you can also learn how to operate different types of puppets, make our own puppet and check out other marionette merriment.

Veni, Vidi, da Vinci

The Getty’s exhibit “Leonardo da Vinci and the Art of Sculpture” is closing later this month (June 20, to be precise). If you have been meaning to see it, this Saturday would be a fine time to make your way to the Getty, which will be throwing a Family Festival that day. This daylong event features Italian opera, folk music and folk tales as well as interactive workshops. It promises to be an entertaining glimpse into Renaissance Italy. While admission to the Getty is free, the parking costs $15.

Tahiti Via Santa Ana

Experience the Pacific Island at the Bowers Museum on Sunday. This Target First Free Sunday celebration will be transporting visitors to the Pacific Rim. Enjoy Tahitian drums and dance by Nonosina, the unique sounds of the didgeridoo by L.A. Outback and the dances of the Marianna Islands by Kutturan Chamoru. Please note that due to the safety concerns and space limitations, the museum is only allowing the first 1,500 people entrance into the “Secrets of the Silk Road” exhibit.

Dads, Daughters, Hoops and Fun

Father’s Day might be a couple weeks away, but the WNBA’s Los Angeles Sparks is celebrating early. On Sunday, the team is having a special event for dads and daughters. For the $50 two-ticket package, you can have the exclusive chance to play ball on the Staples court before the game as well as get an ESPN game card, T-shirts and more. For the $40 package, you can get two Sparks tickets, the T-shirts and the ESPN Zone game card. There are also regular tickets for the game (versus the Atlanta Dream), which range from $10-$55.

Totally Gross…And Scientific

Grossology returns to the Discovery Science Center on May 29, and it represents one of more unique museum shows in Southern California. This exploration of the inner workings of the human body includes such “icky interactives” as a “tour du nose,” a “gas attack” pinball game and “burp machine.” They aren’t joking when they call this exhibit, “Grossology.” However, amidst all this grossness are scientific learning experiences, too. On opening day, there also will be free hot dogs while supplies last. Admission to The Cube is $12.95 for adults and $9.95 for children 2 and older.

The Art Of Knowledge Revealed

Currently up at the Zimmer Children’s Museum is an art exhibit entitled “Show & Tell: The Art of Knowledge.” Fitting in with the museum’s mission to teach people about global citizenship, cultural sensitivity and community responsibility, this exhibit includes an international selection of artists, like Burton Morris, Helene Kudrow Sherman and Paul Frank, addressing the show’s theme of  “knowledge.” The result is a colorful range of artistic moods, from the playful to the profound, with artists sometimes using school objects in their pieces. A Regal Setting for the Prince of Persia

Disney and producer Jerry Bruckheimer, the team behind Pirates of the Caribbean, have joined forces again for another summertime blockbuster. Prince of Persia: The Sands of Time is an action-packed epic adventure based upon the popular video game series. The film, which was directed by Mike Newell (Harry Potter and the Goblet of Fire), stars Jake Gyllenhaal. While it is a Disney film, it’s also rated PG-13, making it probably too intense for young viewers. For those of age, there is a special treat at the El Capitan Theatre – and we’re not talking about the concession stand. The theater will be displaying a collection of costumes and props from the movie. Ticket prices vary.
